The UK has pledged to adopthighly selective shrimp fishing gear in its fleet by July 2012.
The European Commission strong-armedthe UK into making the commitment at the European Union’s December Fisheries Council.
Government sources say thiswas the price the UK had to pay to head off the commission’s threatenedpenalties for overshooting its days at sea -- penalties that would haveeffectively shut down the UK shrimp and whitefish fleets.
The Commission launched thebombshell clawback of buy-back days without warning at the end of 2011.
