Filipino fishermen and other fishermen from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) working on some UK fishing vessels are being deported by the UK Border Agency, creating serious crewing problems on the west coast of Scotland and Irish Sea.
Vessel owners in the UK and Ireland, as in most Western European countries, have experienced problems in recruiting good caliber crewmen for some years now as problems in the industry and social changes have reduced the attractions of fishing as a career.
