RWE Energy said Tuesday it was shelving a wind farm project that was still awaiting the official go-ahead because of unforeseen technical difficulties.

The Atlantic Array would have covered 77 square miles about 10 miles from the north Devon coast, 14 miles from the south Wales coast and eight miles from Lundy Island nature reserve.

The turbines would have been 720 feet high and capable of producing enough electricity for up to 900,000 homes.

Fishermen who have been in negotiations with the developers over compensation and other matters for seven years, welcomed the development -- but warned they still face a major threat to their livelihoods from an even bigger marine conservation zone (MCZ) planned for the area and other possible renewable energy projects.
