Nearly six in 10 of the more than 1,000 residents of the Portland, Maine, area who were surveyed said knowing the seafood they might eat was caught locally would increase the amount of seafood they purchased.

Agents from the Keller Williams Realty Portland, Maine-based real estate office in May conducted a consumer survey on behalf of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI).

The survey of 1,013 people found more than half of those said they would pay slightly more for sustainably caught and locally harvested seafood, particularly if they knew it would support fishermen, coastal communities or the ocean environment.
