Dick Martin, CEO Boston-based Black Pearl Seafood, which abandoned the U.S. domestic market in 2002 in favor of steadier, more consistent European buyers, told IntraFish he's been “astounded” at the resilience of consumers during the slump.

“We haven’t seen a downturn in a number of years. We’ve had our flat periods, but every year we’ve sold more than the previous year,” said Martin (pictured).

“Even when the dollar was gaining strength through 2008, I was really astounded that the European customers were very resilient.
