The U.S. scallop industry is “closely monitoring” the Canadian situation, and may drop its bid if the Canadians “are required to modify fishing procedures/gear to meet collateral agendas attached to MSC’s criteria of ‘sustainability,’” Dick Martin of Boston-based Black Pearl Seafoods told IntraFish.
The eastern Canada offshore sea scallop fishery entered full MSC assessment in August, and is expected to complete the certification process before the end of 2009. The U.S. fishery entered the pre-assessment phase for MSC certification earlier this year.
