That’s an increase of 33 percent, according to statistics released Tuesday by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
Overall, the United States imported 202 million kilos of salmon – ranging from fresh to farmed to canned – this year, compared to 194 million kilos last year.
The United States imported fewer kilos of fresh farmed Atlantic salmon fillets, but paid more money for the fish. The U.S. imported $518 million (€390 million) worth of fillets in the first 10 months of 2006, compared to $429 million in fillets(€323 million) last year – a 20 percent increase in cost.
