Fifty percent of the shoppers polled by Perishables Group said they were buying the same amount as last year, with 25 percent saying they were somewhat less or significantly less and 25 percent saying they were buying somewhat more of significantly more.

The statistics are based on sales data from all perishables departments of conventional supermarkets, more than 13,000 stores, some 50,000 consumer interviews, and reviews of targeted loyalty card data from more than 200,000 households.

For those who said they are buying more fresh seafood, 82 percent said it’s because they are trying to health a healthier diet, 34 percent said to eat less meat, 18 percent wanted their children to eat better, 16 percent were cooking more at home, and 14 percent said because there are more people now in the household.
