Talk of a trade war and potential retaliation against the United States should it proceed with plans to require pangasius to be called catfish and subject to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspections is irrelevant when the health and safety of American fish eaters is at stake, Roger Barlow, head of The Catfish Institute, told IntraFish on Tuesday.
“We’re hearing a lot about trade wars. The threat of a trade war or retaliation has no bearing,” Barlow said. “If countries are unwilling or unable to meet our health and safety standards, why should they be permitted to sell food to us?”
