On Monday, representatives of the U.K. pelagic fishing industry met with the U.K. fisheries minister Richard Benyon to discuss the ongoing mackerel quota problems.
There, Benyon assured them that the North East Atlantic mackerel crisis is high on the agenda of all the U.K. administrations. High-level discussions with the European Commission are taking place and the U.K. prime minister David Cameron has brought up the subject with his EU counterpart, Jose Manuel Barroso, Benyon said.
The U.K. fisheries sector has also argued that the issue should be closely linked to Iceland’s bid to join the EU.
