DEFRA and U.K. Fisheries Minister Huw Irranca-Davies made public a letter he had sent to Scottish Fisheries Minister Richard Lochhead immediately after the proposals were published last week, reported IntraFish publication Fishing News.

“Much of the unilateral action you propose is outside the competence of the Scottish executive and contrary to the interests of large sections of the U.K. fishing industry,” Irranca-Davies told Lochhead.

A spokesman for Lochhead said fisheries licensing and management, “is a devolved issue. To fish in Scottish waters, vessels require a licence from the Scottish government and we are entitled to attach conditions that protect Scotland's interests.”
