The Seafood Choices Alliance (SCA) recently brought its summit to Barcelona, Spain, another mile mark on its quest to transform the seafood industry into an entity that's environmentally sustainable and profitable.

The SCA and groups like it are trying to change the way the seafood business works by promoting a united industry effort – fishermen, fish farmers, retailers, restaurateurs and environmentalists working together toward the same end.

Unfortunately, there is one major problem with that formula, which was on prominent display in Barcelona: Large swaths of the seafood industry still aren't entirely on board with the retailer-driven sustainability agenda, which hinges largely on the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) eco-label.
