Steps to deal with the problem of a haddock quota way out of line with the stock’s abundance in the Celtic Sea were agreed at a recent meeting in Newlyn, United Kingdom.

The packed meeting was organized by the Cornish FPO to address the severe problems facing the demersal fisheries in the region.

The appearance of huge stocks of haddock in the Celtic Sea where it had not previously been a prolific stock and a 33 percent cut in the total allowable catch (TAC) have caused serious management problems in the region’s highly mixed fisheries, where stocks generally are improving and fishing mortality has fallen dramatically.
