A Spanish purse seiner is the first tropical tuna vessel in the world to test the latest in electronic monitoring technology, designed for instances where an on-board human observer is not a practical, or safe, option, or to supplement human observers.
Experts from Canadian Archipelago Marine Research, working on behalf of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF), outfitted the vessel -- owned by Spanish tuna company Pevasa -- with a video-based electronic monitoring system.
IntraFish reported Pevasa was looking to run a trial on Monday.
Pevasa, which operates six purse seiners in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, is installing cameras on its vessels in order to satisfy criteria to get Friend of the Sea eco-label certification.
"Friend of the Sea wasindeed the first one suggesting implementation of CCTV and putting in contactArchipelago with Pevasa," said Paolo Bray, director of Friend of the Sea.
