Dragon Feeds took this year’s award home to Wales after persuading the event’s delegates farmed trout is the United Kingdom's greenest species.
Trout beat handline-caught mackerel from the southwest presented by David Muir of the Southwest Fishermen’s Handline Association; Alaska pollock presented by Peter Hajipieris of Birds Eye Iglo; Scottish haddock presented by Jess Sparks of Seafood Scotland; and others to win the coveted award.
Over the past three years, Dragon Feeds has developed a viable alternative to fishmeal. This included developing a method of binding the appropriate amino acid to a polycheate (ragworm) protein that allow fish and invertebrates to more efficiently digest the required amounts of amino acids, said Project Manager Cliff Gapper.
