French surimi consumption dropped 4 percent last year from 63,373 metric tons in 2011 to 60,500 metric tons, reported the country's surimi trade association, Adisur.

The drop was "mostly weather-dependant," he said, with the "very bad summer" pushing down consumption.

Despite that, nearly seven out of 10 households in France purchased surimi. Fresh surimi sticks accounted for 90 percent, or 50,500 metric tons.
