The Norwegian system, using barcode technology, is intended to pave the way for a separate Norwegian seafood eco-label, Edmund Mikkelsen, project leader at the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC), told IntraFish.
The project’s other goal is to determine whether species other than saithe from Norway should apply for eco-certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
Norwegian shrimp could be a potential applicant, as Canada has applied for this certification for their shrimp, Mikkelsen said.
Mikkelsen leads a work group, consisting of representatives from Norway’s most important seafood organizations, which is considering various aspects related to the establishment of a Norwegian eco-label.
