The images on the pages of this week's Fishing News (issue Oct. 19) are a shocking indictment of how near to the breaking point fishermen in the European Union (EU) are reaching.

No matter whether the French fishermen have a justified case or not over these scallop grounds, (see UK fishermen in scallop war with France) the fact that they would endanger the lives of fellow EU fishermen by ramming their boats, trying to tangle ropes into their propellers -- even throwing rocks at deckhands -- is frightening.

This wasn’t mild intimidation, it was genuine harassment and, it would appear, it’s not over yet.

It was probably just good fortune it did not result in the sinking of a vessel, or worse still, the loss of a life.

Of course, this was a disgraceful action by the French fishermen and was inexcusable when it endangered the lives of ordinary men who were [legally] going about their working day.
