Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing remains a specter hovering over the global fishing industry, undermining the credibility of not just the industry but gravely endangering the sustainability of the resources on which it depends.

The global tuna fishery is one example of a fishery where authorities are failing to effectively curb IUU fishing, where IUU fish caught in third world waters continues to land on first world plates.

Ineffective enforcement of regulations is compounded by the global and complex supply chain of the tuna fisheries, which allows for illegal operators to slip into the EU market, industry insiders told IntraFish.
