As far-reaching changes take place across global food production as a whole, low-cost labor has become pivotal and the fishing and seafood sectors are no exceptions.

The dark side of this is that ultra-cheap labor in the form of trafficked persons has increased dramatically in some parts of the world, and has become one of the world’s billion-dollar illegal businesses. The International Labor Organization estimates that as many as three million people annually are trafficked.

While this report focuses in South-East Asia, and the problems faced by Thailand and its fishing sector in particular, it should be remembered that Thailand is far from alone here.
