Thai shrimp production could fall to 300,000 metric tons this season, according to the Thai Frozen Foods Association -- around half the normal level, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Shrimp prices have jumped by 20 percent in recent months, the journal reported, prompting some retail and restaurant buyers to openly discuss price hikes.

Landry's, which owns Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and McCormick and Schmick's, said it may have to "selectively" raise prices.

Kroger, North America's largest retail chain, did not discuss increasing prices, but did say "it will have an economic impact," the journal reported.
