Once known for its black tiger shrimp, Thailand transitioned to white shrimp several years ago, and 99 percent of its shrimp production is white vannamei, although the government expects some increase in black tiger production in the coming years.
Thailand already gets its white shrimp broodstock from SPF stocks grown in Hawaii, and the country’s two largest shrimp producers – Thai Union Frozen Foods and Charoen Pohkphand – own the SPF broodstock firms there, Prompoj said last week at the Boston Seafood Show.
