Canning group MW Brands, owned by Thai Union Frozen Products, entered a partnership with Oceamic Laayoune, a Moroccan sardine cannery owned by frozen seafood manufacturer Sarma Food.
Oceamic co-packs sardines under the John West and Parmentier brands, which sells in the European market.
"For now the deal is to co-pack sardines only, though mackerel has come in for discussion as well," according to Sarma.
According to a news site, the current EU-Morocco Fisheries Partnership Agreement states that EU vessels have to land a certain percentage of catches in Moroccan or Western Saharan ports.
