A non-profit NGO based in Chennai, south India, recently launched the second phase of its IT-driven rural empowerment initiative that benefits several thousand fishermen across a vast swath of southern coastal India.
Using multiple tools of communication -- both traditional and modern -- fishermen access relevant information regarding weather forecasts, early tsunami warnings, cyclones, high waves, and potential fishing zones.
The second phase of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation's (MSSRF's) "knowledge connectivity program" -- first rolled out in 2011-2012 -- will target fishermen in the coastal districts of Nagapattinam and Karaikal in south India.
