According to the report, "Sustainable Marine Aquaculture: Fulfilling the Promise; Managing the Risks," from the Marine Aquaculture Task Force, more legislation is needed to ensure fish farming operations are not harmful to the environment.
The task force, established by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution with support from The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Lenfest Foundation, spent two years studying the issue before releasing its findings.
Marine aquaculture is controversial and assessing future environmental impacts is challenging, said the task force, an independent group of scientists, scholars, aquaculturists and policy experts.
