Industry members are meeting this week in Astoria, Ore., at the 14th annual Surimi School, sponsored by Oregon State University.
At Monday’s surimi industry forum, members discussed how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruling to drop the “imitation” requirement from surimi labels will impact the industry. Now, packaging must say the product is made with surimi and “flavored” to taste like crab, lobster, scallops, scrimp or other seafood.
“It’s a new, exciting period in the industry,” said Rick Muir, president of the Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers (GAPP) and vice president of American Seafoods.
