Demand for surimi raw material dropped as manufacturers worked through existing inventories, industry sources told Intrafish, while supply is expected to fall again in the next year after a steady decline in 2009.

“Supply [of surimi] this year is much less than last year, and demand also is down for sure. Supply is probably much more down than demand is,” Willem Appeldorn, surimi specialist at Denmark-based trader JP Klausen, told IntraFish.

Appeldorn predicted surimi supply would decline next year, but said it could rise again, especially if the Alaska pollock quota is raised.

“Maybe
