The surimi market in Eastern Europe has fallen to 2009 levels after consumption in the largest markets of Russia and Ukraine fell by 28 percent and 23 percent, respectively, over 2012.
According to figures from Lithuanian producer Viciunai Group, total average consumption of surimi in the region dropped to 82,075 metric tons (0.335 kg/person) in 2012 from 106,575 metric tons (0.435 kg/person) in 2011.
The reduction was predominantly driven by a drop in consumption in the Russian market, which fell by 20,801 metric tons over the period – almost 28 percent – to reach its lowest levels since 2006.
