Creative Salmon won a judgment against Staniford in the B.C. court system after the environmentalist said the company falsely labeled its farmed salmon "organic" because it contained banned chemicals after a trace amount of malachite green was found on one fish.
The company denied the allegations, saying it doesn't know how the one fish ingested malachite green in June 2005, a discovery that forced the company to shut down for several weeks.
In 2006, a B.C. court ruled in favor of Creative Salmon, and ordered Staniford to pay fines and penalties of nearly CAD $75,000 ($64,500/€46,200) in damages and court costs in addition to $15,000 ($12,900/€9,200) a judge ordered him to pay after making defamatory statements against Creative Salmon.
