While fish prices at the quayside are ruinously low, prices to the consumer hardly moved at a time when consumers are being more cautious about purchasing than at any time in the last decade, said all the wholesalers IntraFish spoke to in Boulogne, all of whom wished to remain anonymous.
“The supermarkets aren’t playing fair. Prices for some species such as cod and whiting have fallen by half since last year, yet to the consumer prices haven’t fallen by more than 10 percent at the most,” one trader said.
