The Norwegian Food and Allied Workers Union (NNN) has given notice there will be a major strike in country's fisheries industry beginning midnight, May 20, unless agreement is reached in negotiations. A number of major salmon slaughter plants, including Marine Harvest and Leroy, could be affected if strike action is taken.

The union has given notice to 18 companies, mainly salmon firms, of a possible strike action. Negotiations were held April 28-29 between the NNN and the Norwegian Seafood Federation (FHL).

However, the union broke off  the talks because the FHL would not support its demand for a generally applicable collective agreement.

The FHL denies it rejected the demand, but said it asked for more time to consider this.
