Since 1976, the Joint Norwegian-Russian Fisheries Commission has worked to ensure proper management be followed when fishing for cod and haddock in shared, disputed and “loophole” areas of the Barents Sea. The commission added capelin to its agreement in 1979, and two weeks ago reached accord on management of Greenland halibut stocks.



“It has been functioning very well in its mission of fisheries management,” Terje Lobach (pictured) of the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, said at the International Arctic Fisheries Symposium held Oct.
