It would be nice once in a while be able to report a positive news story about the fishing industry, particularly in our UK weekly paper Fishing News -- but this is difficult when almost every day there is yet more bad news. It is, put simply, death by a thousand cuts.
The latest report that Scottish traditional prawn trawlers could be looking at an unthinkable four-month tie up due to administrative errors and an overshoot in kW days is a terrifying prospect for fishermen, shellfish buyers, processors and retailers - not to mention the families and communities that would suffer as a result of such drastic action.
And on top of this news is the staggering announcement by the European Union fisheries commission that it is to give serious consideration to environmental groups’
