Spanish publication El Diario on Wednesday posted an article titled 'Illegal fishing and slave labor behind surimi, the false crab that no one knows where it's coming from.'
The article cites theThe Guardian’s 2014 award-wining report on slavery in the Thai seafood supply chains, as well as links found by the reporters to shrimp giant CP Foods.
In addition, the article published in the Spanish press emphasizes that surimi sticks, also known as crab sticks are not made of crab, but of “a mix of remains of fish that was started in Japan to use leftovers.
“It is an amalgam of fish species of low quality, caught exclusively to produce surimi, with which producers form a paste sold in blocks,” the article reads.
“The
