Spain, like other European Union countries, has expressed concerns at the biological situation of red tuna stocks.

Bearing in mind the current catch plan was applied satisfactorily for the 2008 and 2009 fishery campaigns, Spain’s Rural and Marine Environment Ministry said “it would be a good idea to wait for the results of the latest scientific reports in October 2009, which will be analyzed in the annual meeting of the ICCAT in November 2009, before taking other conservation action like a ban on temporary and conditioned catches.

"In
