The southern bluefin tuna season has started this week with an increased total catch limit, its highest level since the late 1980s, reported ABC Rural.
The quota has recently been increased by 10 percent, which takes the total catch limit to 5,665 metric tons.
Andrew Wilkinson, general manager of Tony's Tuna International, said the increase shows the industry is doing what it can to keep stocks sustainable.
"Through the International Commission for the Conservation of Bluefin Tuna being pushed by the Department of Agriculture and Australian Fisheries Management and industry, we've finally got a management procedure which allows the stock to recover and allow the increased catches."
The increase in quota could see more people needed to work in the industry, Wilkinson said.
"From the catching side, there probably won't be more needed, but there are more fish to tow back, so that's more towing pontoons that will be needed.
