There was nothing wrong with the South American fish, but it did bear new information, in the form of a Country-of-Origin Label that allowed Hotchkiss to make an informed decision about her purchase.

The new food labeling law, nicknamed COOL, became effective Sept. 30 across the country, and consumers like it -- even if they tend to overestimate its purpose.

"It's good," Hotchkiss said of the law that led to the Suriname label, "...to make Americans aware that we're not the only ones out there."
