The clients for the Ozernaya River beach seine and trap net sockeye salmon fishery, Vityaz-Avto Ltd. and Delta Co. Ltd., are both exporters, so have a market driven reason to look at certification.
Canadian firm Pasco Seafood Enterprises, the main importer of Ozernaya sockeye products into the North American market, played a major leading role in encouraging the fishery into the MSC assessment process, Brian Caouette, director of sustainable fisheries and markets with the Wild Salmon Center, a group that has been working with the industry on the assessment, told IntraFish.
