Snapperfarm owner Brian O’Hanlon, who started the business in 2002, is allowed by law to produce 50 tons of cobia a year from the company's farm off the coast of Culebra, Puerto Rico.

The company has the technology to produce much more, and is eager to do so because of surging demand for the fish, O’Hanlon told IntraFish.

“We’re investigating an expansion site,” he said.

Under consideration are offshore sites near Panama, Brazil and the Dominican Republic, he said. “We don’t want to have all of our eggs in one basket,” O’Hanlon said.
