At first glance, there are few similarities between Iceland and Namibia.

Iceland is known for its dazzling glaciers; Namibia for its sweeping deserts. Iceland ranks second on the United Nations Human Development Index; Namibia 125th.

Yet one important similarity does exist between the two countries – their massive economic reliance on fish.

Midway through the 20th century, Iceland cleverly leveraged its vast fisheries resource to launch its economy into a position of global leadership.

"Over the course of two decades, we went from utter poverty to having one of the highest standards of living in the world," said Einar Gundfinsson, Iceland's minister of fisheries.
