The Chilean salmonid industry is in upheaval, but small and medium-scale Atlantic salmon, coho and trout producers could be the ones to lose out in the coming years, Julio Traub, head of the Chilean industry organization for salmonid producers Acotruch, told IntraFish.

Stricter legislation, favorable to the production of Atlantic salmon, and an expected wave of consolidation will lead to bankruptcies and closures, resulting in "no more than 16" producers by 2016-2017, he said.

What is good news for leading Chilean salmon producers could result in capital and job losses for small-scale players, he said.
