Caladero, a processing company that exclusively supplies Spain’s largest supermarket chain Mercadona, is targeting a 60 percent growth in volumes this year.

This follows a 30 percent growth in 2011, a spokesperson said.

Caladero is more focused and trimmer today than it was 17 months ago, when Mercadona took over its core business. Since then Caladero has shed its international subsidiaries and most recently sold its 50 percent stake in Gambafresh, a warmwater shrimp processor, back to its founders in March.

The result is that Caladero is today exclusively focused on its core business: chilled fish served in trays using modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), and exclusively sold to Mercadona.
