The situation regarding human trafficking and slave labor in Thailand's fishing industry "is now severe" but the country is taking action to tackle it, Prayuth Chan-ocha, the country's prime minister, told CNN in an interview.
The government is updating “outdated” legislation to tackle the issue, said Chan-ocha.
“This has been happening for a long time. Previous governments have tried to solve the problem, but not effectively.
“So I've had to overhaul the laws, so we can deal with the issues. The laws relating to fisheries are very outdated and must be amended so the agencies can operate effectively.”
