Such was the case with the tale of the barndoor skate, a fish most of us don’t care much about but whose story provides a cautionary reminder to take everything you see, hear and read with a grain of salt.
The barndoor skate – a shark-like fish with cartilage and no bones – is the largest of the various skate species occupying the northeast Atlantic Ocean. A paper published in 1998 in the journal Science by two researchers, Jill Casey and Ransom Myers, talked of possible extinction for the species.
