Bristol Bay fishermen and processors were running around the clock this weekend, catching and processing over 5.7 million salmon, but among the unexpected aspects of this season is a higher-than-average take of smaller fish.
With an estimated 41 percent of the total harvests from Togiak and Naknek coming out as two-to four-pound headed and gutted finished products, larger-sized fish are finding a more premium price, one source said.
If that trend continues and there isn't a larger harvest coming from Bristol Bay, those prices will stay high until the Frasier River sockeye salmon season opens, the source said.
