This figure is based on an ex-farm value -- referring to the value of the fish straight as it exits the farm and excluding any transportation costs.

This comes as the industry has invested some £5.1 million (€6.2 million/$7.9 million) into South West Shetland this year, the association said. This went to fund “new and refurbished cages, nets, boats, barges and increased placement of smolt, [helping] secure 29 full time and six part time jobs on salmon farms.”

Shetland’s salmon industry employs some 1,000 people -- directly and indirectly --, representing more than one in ten of the islands’ total workforce.
