Rockefeller, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, sent a letter to the acting comptroller general, Gene Dodaro, asking for further investigation.

More investigation is needed because of concerns of fragmentation among the federal agencies that have a role in seafood inspections and their ability to protect food safety and combat fraud, the senator said, citing a recent report from the General Accounting Office (GAO).

In the letter, dated June 30, Rockefeller says the report found failure to fully utilize the expertise of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in inspecting seafood shipments from overseas, even though NMFS has three memorandums of understanding with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The
