“For the moment ‘fields’ of wild seaweed are managed by producers who supply local factories. It’s true that demand is increasing slowly and there is room for a farming activity but the price of the finished product would probably be too high,” marketing and sales manager for CEVA (seaweed manufacturing technology centre), Guillermino Martins, told IntraFish.
The European harvest, which comes mainly from France (around the north and south Brittany coasts), Scotland and Ireland, represents around 100,000 tonnes per year whereas eight million tonnes of seaweed are harvested worldwide.
