Last month, the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions released updated guidelines for fishery improvement projects (FIPs), which will help Conservation Alliance members in their recommendations to business partners for seafood sourcing.
Brad Spear, head of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership's (SFP) systems division, has been deeply involved with forming the guidelines for several years now and feels that the NGO community has grabbed on to FIPs tools in general for the past eight to 10 years.
Spear told IntraFish that he has “absolutely” seen an increase in demand for information for FIPs, “most, if not all, of the business partners and the big retailers we work with have FIPs noted in their procurement policies and sustainability goals; once that is locked into their policy, they look to NGO partners of the alliance to monitor and achieve those goals.”
