After the news broke last week that Russian veterinary authorities found excessively high levels of lead and cadmium in salmon from four slaughter plants in Norway, and then stopped imports from these slaughter plants, panic erupted among investors on the Oslo Stock Exchange, salmon exporters and Norwegian veterinary authorities.

Hectic diplomatic activity ensued, in part because the news spread like wildfire across the globe, including Japan, which has stringent regulations concerning toxic subsances in imported food products.

Russian veterinary authorities were invited to Norway to take a closer look at Norwegian salmon, and the fish producers’ organization, the Norwegian Seafood Federation (FHL), sent out a notice stating ”absolutely all the indications point to that the heavy metals which were detected in the salmon, have not been infused in Norway."
